Online learning and the successful use of technology in courses is a key component of the educational experience at the School of Public Health (SPH).
The Office of E-Learning Services provides:
- full support for faculty developing online courses for the MPH core and online programs and certificates
- consultations for faculty developing hybrid courses or teaching remotely, experimenting with technology or pedagogy, and working on special projects
- resources and support for students taking SPH online courses
- resources for faculty and TAs who are teaching or supporting SPH courses

Online Course Development
ELS provides a full suite of services to faculty and instructors teaching online courses, including instructional design expertise, project management, and Canvas site and media development. If you are teaching an online course, you will be paired with an ELS liaison to guide you through the process.
In-Person Canvas Site Support
ELS will help you create or update your Canvas course site, consistent with the SPH template. To request Canvas course site support for an in-person course, email E-Learning Services at sphels@umn.edu. ELS staff will respond to email to schedule a brief consultation as a first step in providing support.
In addition, email support and troubleshooting for Canvas-related course issues will be available throughout the semester.
Timelines for Requesting Support (In-Person/Hybrid Courses)
- Spring courses: Requests due December 15
- Summer courses: Requests due April 30
- Fall courses: Requests due July 31

ELS has expertise in pedagogy, instructional design, accessibility, learning technology use, instructional media production, and more. We are available to consult on any instructional challenges or questions you may have.
