The TRUTH Project

The Towards Recognition and University-Tribal Healing (TRUTH) Project is part of a Minnesota, Twin Cities, and University of Minnesota justice-oriented MN Transform project. In response to the 2020 resolutions written by the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council (MIAC) calling on the University of Minnesota to be better relatives to the 11 Tribal Nations, the TRUTH Project is a collaborative effort between MIAC and the University that is convening a TRUTH Task Force that will release a report detailing findings and recommendations for the University on bettering their relations with the Tribal Nations in Minnesota.

At the heart of this truth-telling project is community-led participatory research designed to give Tribes the opportunity to tell, in their words, the history of relations between their Tribal Nation and the University of Minnesota.

U of M Libraries: Conducting Research through an Anti-Racism Lens

This guide was developed in response to requests from UMN researchers looking to incorporate anti-racism into their research practices. Conducting research through an anti-racism lens is an ongoing process and must be considered as part of a complex system which oppresses people and groups in multifaceted ways (i.e., classism, ethnocentrism, capitalism, ableism, etc.). While some disciplines have mitigated racism through understanding of critical race theory, others have not. Consult the Related Guides and Resources for reading lists to help form a baseline understanding or reach out to your subject librarian for individualized help locating anti-racism learning experiences. This guide shares resources for mitigating problematic systems and practices, but it is acknowledged that it is not a “solution” to the issues of racism embedded in research.

U of M Libraries: Anti-racism Readings List

Dean of the Libraries, Lisa German, said, “Antiracism is a journey, as Ibram X. Kendi tells us in How to Be an Antiracist, and we commit to identifying and addressing the ways white supremacy manifests itself throughout all aspects of librarianship. We must be accountable for this work. Our U Office for Equity and Diversity says: We all share responsibility for equity and diversity — it’s everybody’s everyday work. We are committed to making this a priority for the University of Minnesota Libraries.”

Advancing Health Equity: Why Equity Matters

Across the nation, gaps in health are large, persistent and increasing—many of them caused by barriers set up at all levels of our society. After all, it’s hard to be healthy without access to good jobs and schools and, safe, affordable homes. Health equity means increasing opportunities for everyone to live the healthiest life possible, no matter who we are, where we live, or how much money we make.

SPARC

SPARC is a non-profit advocacy organization that supports systems for research and education that are open by default and equitable by design. We believe everyone should be able to access and contribute to the knowledge that shapes our world.

As a catalyst for action, our pragmatic agenda focuses on driving policy change, supporting member action, and cultivating communities that advance our vision of knowledge as a public good. From the local to the global level, SPARC works to address the ways in which our knowledge systems exclude people due to racism, colonialism, and other legacies of injustice.
