Faculty appointments are classified into ranks and types. These classifications have significance in regard to benefits and rights that may or may not pertain to each category or classification. See Academic Appointment Category Details for additional information.
The standards used for regular appointment decisions shall include those established for the recommended rank of the person being considered, as enumerated below. In addition, the criteria shall include the ability of the person being considered to contribute to the central mission of the school and to adapt to its changing needs.
Faculty Appointment Ranks
Appointment requires a demonstrated potential in the area of teaching. Job code: 9404.
Appointment requires a demonstrated potential in the areas of teaching and scholarly activity. An earned Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D., Dr.P.H., or an equivalent degree is required. Job code: 9403.
Appointment generally requires a particularly strong record in either teaching or research and demonstrated potential in the other area. An earned Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D., Dr.P.H., or equivalent degree is required. Job code: 9402.
Teaching
- Clearly recognized for impact and effectiveness as a teacher and advisor. Teaching may take many forms, including independent teaching, co-teaching, distance learning, and summer institutes. All forms and types of classes are valued. A record of teaching substantial courses (as primary instructor) provides the strongest evidence for evaluating teaching ability and accomplishments.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully advise and train students for scientific inquiry.
Research
- Show evidence of having mastered the discipline and the ability to carry out independent inquiry.
- Collaborative research among divisions within the school, across the University, and beyond is valued.
- High quality publications in prestigious peer-reviewed journals relevant to the development of the discipline or its application to public health
- Contributions towards development of a sustainable funded research program including competitively awarded grants, the publication of peer-reviewed books and book chapters and other scholarly activities as defined in the Board of Regents Policy: Faculty Tenure (Section 7.11)
- Evidence of sustained performance in scholarly activities.
Service
- Important supplementary component of candidate’s activities
- Activities aimed at improving public health are particularly valued

- One or more outstanding publications with the personality and contribution for full professorship.
- Collaborative research among divisions in the School, the University and beyond is valued.
- Evidence including leadership in a sustainable, funded research program including competitively awarded grants, publication of peer-reviewed books and book chapters, and other scholarly activities as defined in the Board of Regents Policy: Faculty Tenure (Section 9.2).
Service
- Important supplementary component of activities.
- Demonstrated impact in file within the framework of professionally related community activities which contribute to major, division, school and university functions, professional organizations, and the local, state, national or international community.
- Aimed at improving public health is particularly valued.
Faculty Appointment Types
Primary appointment is not within the school. Role is determined as one that supports the mission of the school and its goals and values. Annually reviewed by the division head. Paid appointment. A contract (term) faculty is a non-tenure, paid annual renewable or multi-year appointment. The appointment carries no right to, nor presumption of, a right to renewal of a contract term or to consideration of indefinite tenure. The beginning and ending dates of employment are specified in the contract and on the notice of appointment from the University. The primary criteria for the appraisal of contract (term) faculty is the satisfactory progress towards meeting the standards of their contract in the areas of teaching and/or research. Contract (term) faculty are governed by the School of Public Health Contract Faculty Appointment and Promotion Policy, and the Board of Regents Policy: Faculty Tenure.
These individuals constitute the core faculty of the school and participate in teaching, research/scholarship and service/outreach. Probationary Tenure Track faculty are governed by the School of Public Health Academic Faculty Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Policy (7.12), and the Board of Regents Policy: Faculty Tenure.
They are reviewed annually during Years 1-6 of the probationary period to determine whether the faculty is making satisfactory progress towards tenure, write an evaluation of that progress, and vote on continuation of the appointment for another year. The yearly evaluation provides feedback to the faculty and becomes part of their accumulating record for later decisions concerning promotion and/or tenure. The review in Year 6 is for promotion or discontinuance of the faculty appointment. Job codes: Associate Professor (9402), Assistant Professor (9403).
These individuals constitute the core faculty of the school and participate in teaching, research/scholarship and service/outreach. Appointments with indefinite tenure will be granted only to probationary tenure track faculty or to faculty who have been recruited for a specific tenured position in accordance with University and school affirmative action and equal opportunity policies and procedures. Tenured faculty appointments are governed by the Board of Regents Policy: Faculty Tenure, Section 7.11 and Section 9.2 criteria. Job codes: Professor (9401), Associate Professor (9402).
The title of emeritus is conferred on eligible tenured faculty members in accordance with the terms of the Board of Regents Policy: Faculty Emeriti and at the faculty member’s rank at the time of retirement. The title does not confer any employment status, rights, or associated entitlements. The title of emeritus is not conferred upon faculty who leave the University for full time employment in a tenured position at another institution.
Visiting faculty are individuals who have a regular faculty appointment at another university (or similar status in a research institution) or in government service. Typical appointment periods are one year or less. Only persons who are on leave from regular appointments at another university, research institution, government service, or other similar organizations are eligible for these appointments. No formal search is required. Appointments are guided by the policy on Academic Appointments With Teaching Functions and its Appendix.
