First Day Preparations

When selecting a start date, supervisors need to allow enough time for background check completion and I-9 processing. It is best practice to start on a Monday. Once a hire has accepted the position, be sure the signed offer letter gets routed to sph-hr@umn.edu as this triggers an HR team member to send a welcome email to the new hire with specific instructions and what to expect with the onboarding process.

Background Check

Employees (non-student classifications) must pass a background check prior to their start date.

I-9 Employment Verification Requirements

U guidelines state all faculty, staff, and student workers must complete Sections 1 and 2 of the federal I-9 form on or before their first day. Otherwise, the employee cannot work and earn wages.
