The School of Public Health (SPH) is required to review the progress toward promotion of tenured associate professors no less than every four years. There is no required review for contract (term, non-tenure) associate professors, however, they may request participation in the review cycle by contacting SPH OFA. This process does not apply to tenure track associate professors, who instead complete the annual appraisal of probationary tenure track faculty (UM Form 12).
These reviews are developmental in nature and are not disciplinary. The review provides feedback about faculty members’ progress toward meeting the criteria and standards for promotion as defined by the Board of Regents: Faculty Tenure Subsection 9.2, the SPH Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Policy (7.12), and the SPH Contract Faculty Appointment and Promotion Policy (2012).
Divisions are responsible for conducting reviews of their associate professors, summarizing faculty progress and reporting outcomes each cycle. To support this process, a guide has been created; links to this and other supportive materials are provided below.
Contact the SPH Office of Faculty Affairs at sph-ofa@umn.edu with questions about the promotional review of associate professors process or review cohort assignment.
